COLBY BRIGHT INTERVIEW WITH JOEJOE KEYS & INDIE PLUS MUSIC
Colby Bright is a 29 year old unsigned hip hop artist out of Montgomery, Tx. Like many hip hop artists Colby is on the grind and has recently released a new mixtape entitled “Victory Lap 2.0: The Resurrection” now available on Soundcloud, Datpiff and Live Mixtapes to name a few. Bright has quite the resume.
Over the past 10 years of his career he has received commercial radio play in different states, consistent online radio play and has been featured on Worldstar Hip Hop (WSHH), XXL, MTV.com, CNN iReport, Vlad TV(Including “Next 2 Blow”) & MORE! I could keep going but I only have so much room for this review!
So, at first glance it looks like Colby Bright is working hard without any end in sight. That’s what happens when you have an unquenchable thirst for success.
One thing I can definitely say about Colby Bright’s music is that there is never a dull moment!! Hopefully you have hit play on the Soundcloud player above so you can listen to the music while reading my ramblings. I’m certain you are smart enough to develop your own opinion. Speaking of…leave those thoughts in the comments below!
The first song that jumped out to me on my first listen through was the bonus track “Say Ohhh” Ft Najasism. Scroll down to the bottom of the playlist to listen. To me this song sticks out from the others simply because of the pop appeal. The vocal hook is a winner to me and I’ll be singing it for weeks!!
“I Made It” is a well produced hip hop track with flow that won’t stop. Like I said, never a dull moment. There is one thing tho that I must mention from an engineering standpoint. So far in the record and even beyond the vocals are mixed well and are easily understood. However, I do have one problem with the vocal mix on some songs in general tho. There seems to be a very high amount of “s’s” meaning the vocals are mixed a bit on the high end for my taste. Every time a “s” is said my ears start to hurt. I admit my ears are extra sensitive to this but this is the sort of stuff that can make or break a mix.
Another notable track is “History.” It amazes me how minimalistic hip hop has become. Half of this song has no beat, just a vocal and keyscape…I like it. On the next track “Illest Alive” I swear there is a Bjork sample but I can’t place it and it’s driving me crazy!! Overall this is a chill track with a positive message about self confidence and drive.
“I’m That Man” goes straight clubbin’ and it’s not stopping anytime soon. This track jams and made my head start bobbing instantly. The kick patterns in the beat are bassy but not mixed obnoxiously loud like some other producers. These beats sound good in any stereo. I’m lovin’ this beat!!
“Ready For War” has a cool vibe that is created by the guitar in the background. I’ve also noticed that the vocal mix has evened out over the progression of the tape…that’s great! I think this track has the best vocal mix on the tape.
Overall “Victory Lap 2.0: The Resurrection” is a very strong release by Colby Bright that I highly recommend especially if you like underground hip hop with lots o’ flow. Share this review around to your friends and comment below and show support for indie music and indie hip hop. Let’s get Colby Bright heard!!

How are you Colby can you let everyone know how you teamed up with DJ Infamous for yourVictory Lap mixtape? My team and I, 1Krown and I loved what he had going on and thought he’d be a great fit for the project. We had a previous business relationship so we just reached out and made it happen.
I loved the way he did it and I’m proud to say he will also be hosting the follow up to thatproject, Victory Lap 2.0. Dropping next month.
You don’t have the average sound you hear everywhere nowadays. What inspires your unique lyrical sound? Thanks man, I really pride myself on that. And to be completely honest, I rap from the heart and just want to be that spokesperson for the Underdogs and Have-Nots to be truth that dreams come true. Colby Bright teams up with Atlanta’s Najasism, for his Latest Club Track, “Say Ohhh
“Say Ohhh” could easily be one of my favorite new songs. As soon as it came on I found myself moving and dancing in my seat without even realizing it. I would love to hear this track on the radio or in the club; it’s got a great rhythm, the voices sound hot, and anything that makes you want to move is just what they want in the club; and what I want in my music. I’ll be adding Colby Bright to my playlist today. This song is hot!

ALEX FAULKNER (LOS ANGELES, CA) REVIEWS COLBY BRIGHT’S NEWEST RELEASE, “VICTORY LAP 2.0: THE RESURRECTION”
Victory Lap 2.0: The Resurrection by Colby Bright
Colby Bright is a hip hop artist hailing from Montgomery, Texas. He claims music has helped him through personal hardship and his artistic background began when he started writing poetry at thirteen to help express his emotions. At seventeen, he began rapping over beats and formed a group Knuckle Up Records. As a solo artist, he has appeared on MTV and collaborated with artists like Young Buck, Lil Wyte and Whitney Peyton.
This mixtape, Victory Lap 2.0: The Resurrection, consists of 22 tracks, starting with a powerful intro that samples Lorde covering Everybody Wants To Rule The World. Colby has a distinctive rapping style, the rhymes coming thick and fast and delivered with conviction.
The resilience defiance of I Made It is an early highlight followed up by the anthemic Back From The Dead. History describes the struggles of his past: “I’ve left behind that misery, all I know is struggle but look what that did to me…”. Born To Be A Star shows his self belief backed by a funky hip hop beat, while Illest Alive shows his passionate intensity with some breathtaking rapping: “You can hear it, the conviction in my voice…”.
Ready 4 War is another highlight, mixing hip hop with electric guitar to great effect, The World Is Mine has a catchy hook that makes it a potential single while Tonight We Goin’ Hard is a great party anthem. Living My Life and the stoic Burden On My Back are late highlights, and the final proper track My Love 4 The Game ends things on a positive note with the great line: “I’d rather be a role model than a celebrity…”.
Overall, this is a consistently strong mixtape that contains several standouts that could all be used as singles. Using various producers and guest rappers keeps the sound fresh, and Colby always has something important to say. Its surely only a matter of time before Colby Bright is recognized as a major talent in the hip hop world.
Verdict: 8.7 out of 10
